Lumens vs. Candela: How to Actually Compare Duty Lights

The short answer: read candela first, lumens second

Every duty light is sold on one number — lumens — and that number cannot tell you whether the light will do your job. Lumens say how bright the room gets. Candela says how far the beam reaches. They are different measurements of different things, and the order to read them in is the reverse of how they’re marketed: candela first, because reach is what varies most between lights, then lumens for how much spread comes with it.

Both numbers sit on the same spec panel — the ANSI/PLATO FL1 panel that reputable manufacturers publish for every light — so this is not detective work. It’s knowing which two lines matter and what each one is actually claiming.

What each number actually measures

Lumens: the size of the light

A lumen is a unit of total light output — everything the emitter produces, in every direction, before the reflector or lens shapes it. More lumens means more total light to work with. It says nothing about where that light goes.

Candela: the focus of it

Candela measures peak beam intensity — how concentrated the light is at the strongest point of the beam. This is what the optic and reflector do with the lumens: a deep, focused optic stacks them into a tight hotspot that holds together at distance; a wide or diffused optic spreads them into flood. Two lights with the same lumen figure can differ enormously in candela, and the high-candela one will read a scene at distances where the flood light is just glow.

Beam distance is candela in disguise

The third number on the panel — beam distance — is not a separate measurement. Under FL1 it’s calculated from candela: the distance at which the beam falls to 0.25 lux, roughly full-moon light. The math also explains why throw is expensive: it takes four times the candela to double the beam distance. When you compare beam-distance figures, you’re comparing candela with the arithmetic already done.

Marketing leads with lumens because one big number is easy to print. The reviews that actually measure lights sort them by candela, because that’s the number that separates a duty light from a bright toy. Neither number is a lie — they’re just answers to different questions, and the lumen headline answers the one that matters less for distance work.

The gap between the two isn’t a quality problem, either. It’s a design choice: flood-biased lights spend their output on width, throw-biased lights spend it on reach. The spec panel tells you which choice the manufacturer made. The headline doesn’t.

  • Admin and backup tasks — paperwork, map lights, the second light that lives on the belt no matter what — need neither number to be big. They need the light to be small, always charged, and always there.
